Lynda Wilson is the coordinator of a Refugee Interest Group which we launched at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Birmingham last October to find ways to support refugees.  This Interest Group is open to all, and we now have about 70 people on our email distribution list.  Because the only refugee resettlement agency in Alabama is the Catholic Family Services program in Mobile, our efforts to date have focused on developing educational and advocacy programs.  However, on June 13, the Birmingham Catholic Family Services agency received a refugee family from Colombia,  (a mother, 17-year-old daughter, and 7-year-old son).  We have a wonderful opportunity to provide tangible support for a new refugee family!

The family is being supported by the U.S. Government Refugee Resettlement Program through the Catholic Social Services agency in Birmingham.  This program provides limited financial support for the initial 3 months here in the US, and then the family is expected to be self-sufficient.  At the moment they are staying in Lynda’s home and working hard to accomplish the initial tasks of:  (a) registering for English classes; (b) looking for a job for the mother (who speaks very little English), and (c) finding a reasonably priced apartment to rent (hopefully near a public bus line and less than about $600 per month rent).  We have an excellent opportunity to provide tangible support to help this beautiful family settle into their new life in Alabama!  If you would like to provide assistance with transportation or other needs in the next few weeks, please let Lynda know!  If you have any leads on jobs or apartments for rent, especially in the Hueytown area, please let her know!

If you would like to make a tax-deductible contribution to help the family, you could make out a check to either the Unitarian Universalist Church of Birmingham (UUCB, and put Refugee family assistance in the subject line), and send it (preferably prior to June 26) to the UUCB office, care of Jennie Moffitt.  The address is:  4300 Hampton Heights Drive, Birmingham, AL  35209.

You can also send a check payable to Catholic Social Services of Birmingham attention Crystal Mullen (caseworker working with the family).  The address is 1515 12th Avenue South-Birmingham , AL 35205.  Please write on the subject line that this is for support of the refugee family from Colombia.
