Splinters from the Board

by Darryl Hunt, UUCB President

I freely admit, I especially enjoy being a Unitarian Universalist during this time of year – I get to celebrate so many events! I already have my menorah ready for December 4th and I will soon begin cutting out my paper suns and getting my Yule log ready for Winter Solstice on the December 22 nd . Then, Christmas on the 25 th and Kwanzaa on the 26 th . I love this month! As Chair of the Direct Services workgroup at the Greater Birmingham Ministries, I have for several years now been referring to GBM's annual Christmas gift collection and distribution as the CHiWiSiK celebration (Christmas, Hanukah, Winter Solstice, and Kwanzaa). My GBM friends are so used to this now, they don't even bat an eye when I say it. Anyway, here are a few things to keep in mind and put on your calendar in between your celebrations:

Holiday Gifts for Staff

To all who are interested in contributing to holiday gifts for staff, please keep in mind we have a new procedure this year. This year you should either make out a check to the church (UUCB) and in the memo field write “staff gift” or you can contribute cash. You can place your check or cash either in the decorative holiday box in the back of the sanctuary or you can give it to me or Chuck Jeffries. The cut-off date for making contributions is December 16 th . Staff includes Pam Smith, our church administrator; Gary Packwood, music director; Cynthia Jones, pianist; Linda Barnes, interim director of religious education; and about five child care providers. Reverend Bill has specifically asked not to be included as he wishes this money to go to the staff. You are, of course, still welcome to give Reverend Bill gifts if you like. You are also welcome to give the staff gifts if you choose not to participate in the gift collection. If you have any questions, please call or see me.

Congregational Vote on December 9

We will have a congregational vote on December 9, after the service. This vote should not take long as we have only one item on which to vote: the election of a board secretary. The nominating committee has nominated Trudy Brower for this position and Trudy has been gracious enough to already begin acting in this position; the board has been without a secretary since June. Hopefully we can have a quick vote and release the Justice Committee and Worship Partners to their regularly scheduled meetings.

Greater Birmingham Ministries Holiday Collection

We will begin collecting for the GBM Holiday Gift Giving (CHiWiSiK) on November 25 th . GBM is requesting new unwrapped toys (NO toy guns, please), canned food items, new clothes (baby to 16 years old), and child appropriate books. Footballs, basketballs, coloring books and colors are always appreciated! We will collect items in the narthex next to the Justice table through December 16 th . If anyone is interested in getting a group together to volunteer to pack bags at GBM the week of December 17 through December 21, please see me.

I hope everyone has a wonderful and safe CHiWiSiK!

UUCB President
