Notes from the Elementary Mountain CON

by Carla Craft and Shannon Parks

Last month, a group of Elementary Religious Ed students attended a CON at The Mountain, a UU retreat center in Highlands, North Carolina. Here are some of the highlights, according to chaperones Carla Craft and Shannon Parks. For three hours one night, the whole Mountain lost power. Amazing what fun can happen once the light go out. . .

Shannon Parks: "I don't know about the kids, but the adults had a blast!"

Arden Craft: "BEAUTIFUL!"

According to Mom Carla, here are some things that Arden liked:

~ that the food was healthy and organic, with choices for vegetarians (even though she's neither a vegetarian nor an especially healthy eater. . .).

~ the Blackout Party, with coffeehouse by flashlight and candlelight after The Mountain lost power.
~ circle time and all the camp songs. She has been teaching them to little sister Marley, who now can't wait for her first CON.

Word on the street is that Lester Hood was dubbed "Mr. Happy Feet" thanks to a stunning solo tap dance performance at the coffeehouse!

Maddie Wittenbrink was our own little Sharpay from High School Musical with a song and dance routine. First at the coffeehouse!

Arden Craft and Ryan Anderson performed an interpretation of The Magical Eraser by Shel Silverstein, which resulted in Ryan being erased.

Shannon and Carla played a mean game of ping pong until the lights went out.

Ryan Anderson loved the food and student counselors.

Elliott Emfinger thought the clear nights with stars looked like "sprinkles on a cupcake."

Funniest moment in the UUCB cabin: during the blackout, Ryan was brushing her teeth. Suddenly, the lights came on, and Ryan shrieked in horror when she discovered she had used some else's toothbrush. Says Carla, "I shrieked in even more horror when I discovered that she had used mine! And Arden shrieked in EVEN MORE HORROR when I used the toothbrush anyway."

And finally, the last word from Carla Craft: "I have to say that I had a great time and would encourage any parent or adult interested in working with our children to go to a Mountain CON. The drive is long, but it is so worth the experience."
