Religious Education for Children and Youth

We come together to celebrate who we are, to share the insights that give meaning and hope to our lives, to learn from the wisdom of others, that their truths may contribute to our understanding. We gather, we share, we learn; we celebrate our coming together.    ~ Rev. Ann Peart

We are delighted to share with you about Religious Education (RE) at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Birmingham.

Sunday Mornings

For some parents and other caretakers, the Sunday morning service can often be a time to recharge. For others, this can be a time to work and play creatively with young people in so many different ways!

For young people, Sunday mornings can be a time of renewal and growth, as they come together in community for worship, learning, service, and fun.

For families who choose to set aside one hour each Sunday morning for thoughtful reflection and connection, the rewards are many.

Here's how our Sunday mornings generally work:

Childcare (ages 0-2) is available in the Nursery-Toddler room downstairs from 10:15-12. Feel free to bring little ones down any time after 10:15 AM. No prior arrangements needed. We do ask that you sign in, providing contact details and any known allergy information. We'd also like you to take a moment to make your child a nametag. As soon as the service is done, please be sure to pick up your child.

Preschool (ages 3-4) students may be brought down any time after 10:20 am, or they may choose to stay upstairs with their families for "Time for All Ages."

Older children (ages 5-18) will attend the beginning of the service with their families and be dismissed for classes after "Time for All Ages."

Please Note:

  • All children will be served a light snack in class. If your child has allergies, make sure to note them on the registration form. Because of allergies, all snacks must be approved by the Director of Religious Education.
  • Classes end at 11:40 am. Thank you for picking up your child (ages 0-13) promptly.
  • Extended childcare hours (ages 0-13) are available for special events and on request. Please contact Childcare Coordinator Melissa Hamley at childcare@uucbham.org at least 1-2 weeks in advance of the event. Let her know the times as well as number and ages of children needing care.

Get in touch

We are always happy to hear from you. Whether you are a prospective family, considering visiting our church for the first time, or a longtime member, we want to hear from you. There are a few ways to do this:

  • Come visit! Ask to be introduced to other families and/or Sharron Mendel Swain, the Director of Religious Education. If you have nursery-toddler age children, take them downstairs to meet our childcare workers. Be sure to fill out a visitor card and check that you're interested in Religious Education.
  • Set up a time to talk: contact Sharron Mendel Swain at dre@uucbham.org or 945-8109 to set up an appointment to discuss your family's particular needs and gifts.
  • Download or pick up a copy of our Religious Education Prospectus (currently in development).

Reduce, Recycle, and Raise Some Cash for Religious Education:
By now you probably have all noticed the new recycling bins located in the hallways of UUCB. What you may not have noticed is that one of the bins is labeled “Electronics” where you can recycle old cell phones and used ink cartridges. Not only will these cell phones and ink cartridges be kept out of landfills, but the RE program is collecting these items as a fundraiser through Funding Factory. The more items we collect, the more money we raise for RE, so please look around your homes and places of business, and see if you can help both RE and the environment.

See UU at the ZOO!

We're planning a UU play-group that will meet at 10 am, the 2nd Saturday of each month at the Birmingham Zoo. We'll explore the 7th principle as we wander about and then enjoy a craft or story time and picnic lunch outside the park. This will be a great time of fellowship for the children, parents, and of course all congregants young at heart. Please look for a flier at the RE Welcome Table in September. For more information or to contribute ideas please contact Tara Bawden.

Our first meeting will be the 2nd Saturday in October.  Hope to see you there!
