Social Activities

Social activities help foster friendships and emotional support among members and friends of the congregation. Contact Cathy Taylor for more information regarding social activities, including:

First Sunday Lunch

On the first Sunday of each month (unless otherwise announced) we sit down to a potluck lunch after the service. First-time visitors are our special guests. The rest of us bring a dish to share (or pay a few dollars, but we prefer that you bring food). Please join us and please sign up to help the kitchen committee, which sponsors this event, to clean up afterward.

Cottage Suppers = Good Company! Good Food!

Cottage Suppers are a great opportunity for members/friends (especially new ones!) to get to know more fine folks in our congregation.

Here's the way it works. You will sign up at the host home you wish to attend. The host provides hors d'oeuvres and drinks, and attendees bring the rest of the meal. When your host calls you, ask what you may bring. Sign up in the Social Activities Notebook on the side table in the sanctuary. This is a great way to get to know others in our congregation, and to share a delicious meal. We especially want to invite newcomers and visitors.

Hiking

Hikers! If you're interested in a hiking group, please sign up in the
Social Activities Notebook again. The original sign-up sheet was misplaced. For further information, please contact Susan Putnam.

Women's Night Out; Men's Night Out

Women, are you looking for a way to socialize with other UUs, but just can't find the time to organize something?  Well the Spiritual and Ethical Enrichment Committee has done the organizing for you.   All women are invited to get together for dinner and girl talk on the second Wednesday. Child care will be provided from 6:30 until 8:30 at the church.  Please meet at 6:30 , and after the kids are settled in, we will carpool to a nearby restaurant.   To make sure we have adequate childcare, please sign up in the Social Activities notebook located on the back table of the sanctuary or RSVP to childcare coordinator Melissa Hamley, childcare@uucbham.org.

Men, we aren't trying to keep you from having your own fun, so feel free to meet up at the church at 6:30 too and head off to a restaurant of your own choice.

Gallery Crawl

Fri., Sept. 5th--carpool from the Taylor's home in Crestwood, 5700 10th Ave. So., at 5:00 p.m. We'll be going to opening receptions at the UAB Visual Arts Gallery for "the inaugural John Morton Visiting Artist at UAB, explores issues of women's history in her work." Next, on to Bare Hands Gallery to see the Dan Bynum & Nelson Grice exhibit of drawings, mixed media and clay sculpture. Then we're off to Artists Inc. for their monthly exhibit featuring artistsSue Flowler, Ruth Jones, Mary Ann Kohn, Kat Pilliteri and Jan Weir. If you have any questions, call Cathy Taylor. Sign up in the Social Activities Notebook on the side table in the sanctuary.

UAB Theatre's Annual Festival Of 10-Minute Plays

Sunday, Sept. 28th, 2:00 p.m. at the Alys Stephens Center Odess Theatre, 1200 10th Ave. So. Produced by Playwright-in-Residence, Lee Shackleford, the festival features plays written by UAB students and faculty. This event is FREE. We can decide later where to meet. Sign up in the Social Activities Notebook on the side table in the sanctuary. The festival also takes place on Sept. 24, 25, and 27 at 7:30 p.m., but the Taylor's will be out of town on those dates. If you have any questions, call Cathy Taylor.

Other Social Events

Past outings have included trips to the Anniston Museum of Natural History, the Warner-Westervelt Art Museum in Tuscaloosa, Barons Baseball games, the Cahaba Lily Festival and theater outings for plays at Terrific New Theater, Birmingham Festival Theater, Virginia Samford Theater and the Jewish Community Center plays.

If you have questions about any of these, contact Cathy Taylor, chair_social@uucbham.org (or chair_seec@uucbham.org for Woo-Hoo Wednesday).  Let's go together and share the fun!
