Social ActivitiesSocial activities help foster friendships and emotional support among members and friends of the congregation. Contact Cathy Taylor for more information regarding social activities, including:
First Sunday LunchOn the first Sunday of each month (unless otherwise announced) we sit down to a potluck lunch after the service. First-time visitors are our special guests. The rest of us bring a dish to share (or pay a few dollars, but we prefer that you bring food). Please join us and please sign up to help the kitchen committee, which sponsors this event, to clean up afterward. Cottage Suppers = Good Company! Good Food!Cottage Suppers are a great opportunity for members/friends (especially new ones!) to get to know more fine folks in our congregation. Here's the way it works. You will sign up at the host home you wish to attend. The host provides hors d'oeuvres and drinks, and attendees bring the rest of the meal. When your host calls you, ask what you may bring. Sign up in the Social Activities Notebook on the side table in the sanctuary. This is a great way to get to know others in our congregation, and to share a delicious meal. We especially want to invite newcomers and visitors. Upcoming EventsFamily OutingOn May l7th, we'll be going to see the Doo Dah Day Parade which begins at ll:01 a.m. at Caldwell Park and goes on to Rhodes Park. This is a benefit to raise money for animals in Birmingham and Jefferson County. Participants in the parade often dress up their pets (sometimes they have matching outfits). Bring your animals or not, but definitely bring your children. There will be bands, refreshments, and games in the parks and it's lots of fun. We'll park at Judy Deegan's home, 2742 Milner Ct., about l0:30, and then walk down to the parade. Sign up in the Social Activities Notebook on the side table in the sanctuary. Any questions, contact Cathy Taylor. Baron's Baseball GameBaseball Lovers, mark your calendars for Wed., May 28th for the Rickwood Classic Baseball Game at Rickwood Field, ll37 Second Ave. W. The Birmingham Barons return to the nation's oldest ballpark where Willie Mays, Ted Williams, Dizzy Dean, Satchel Paige, and Reggie Jackson played. This year's annual classic matches the Barons with the Jacksonville Suns. The Barons moved from Rickwood to Hoover 20 years ago. This year's guest of honor will be Jimmy Piersall. He was the first professional athlete to publicly acknowledge that he suffered from a mental illness. During his l7 years as an All-Star major league outfielder, Piersall played for the Boston Red Sox, and a number of other teams. He was also a "color" announcer for the Chicago White Sox. He was one of baseball's most outspoken and controversial announcers. He has called Charlie Finley "the rottenest person I ever met", "told second base umpire Bill McKinley that "they shot the wrong McKinley," short-circuited the White Sox scoreboard, and the fans loved him. A movie has been made of his life. The game begins at 12:35 p.m. Tickets are $9.00; $8:00 for seniors and children. You may purchase your tickets on line at www.barons.com. There is a $4.00 parking fee. We'll carpool from the Taylor's home in Crestwood at ll:30 a.m. Sign up in the Social Activities Notebook on the side table in the sanctuary. If you have any questions, contact Cathy Taylor. M-m-m-m--Chocolate!Come and taste the food of the gods! On Monday, June 2nd at 2:00 p.m., we will have a Chocolate Tasting. Chocolate, like wine, has an amazing array of complex flavors. A chocolate tasting is a fun way to learn to identify and appreciate those flavors. We will learn the history of chocolate, how it's produced, and ways to taste and evaluate it. We will taste a dozen or so top-quality varieties of gourmet chocolate from around the world. Laurie Hicks will conduct the tasting. Laurie is a chocolate scholar and philosopher. She left a glamorous career as a secretary to go to culinary school in 2005. While there, she studied baking and pastry; this curriculum included a class in candy making and working with chocolate. Laurie so loved the class that she wanted to learn more of the special skills needed to work with chocolate, so she began attending chocolate classes at The Notter School of European Pastry taught by Chef Ewold Notter, a chocolate expert, and Andrew Garrison Shotts, who is a well-respected chocolatier. Laurie refined her skills while working as a pastry assistant at Highlands Bar & Gril since 2006. She hopes to continue working with it as a member of the Bakery Team at the Mountain Brook Whole Foods store. The cost is $7.00 per person to cover the cost of the ingredients. We'll be meeting downstairs in the Volker Room at church. Sign up in the Social Activities Notebook on the side table in the sanctuary. There is a limit of ten participants, so sign up early. Dinner and a MovieIn response to requests for social activities over the summer, we're calling for volunteer hosts for Cottage Suppers on Sat., June 2lst ( or a date of your choosing), and for Movie Night on Sat., July l2th (or a date of your choosing). If you've not hosted a Cottage Supper before, here's how it works. The host provides horsd'oeuvres and beverages, and the other participants (usually 6-l0) provide the rest of the meal. For Movie Night, the host provides beverages, and the rest of us bring heavy hors d'oeuvres, with one person bringing dessert. The host usually entertains suggestions for the movie. Please let any member of the Social Activities Committee know if you're interested in hosting for either of these events. We are: Judy Deegan, Carol Hovanec, Marcella Little, Susan Putnam, Cathy Taylor, Jeanette Willert, and Buck Williams. For more suggestions or more information on upcoming events, contact Cathy Taylor, chair_social@uucbham.org. UU House of CoffeeFrom time to time we get together and bring music, song, dance, poetry, standup and share, or just to listen and visit. Organizers Russ Kirby and Tim Day can be reached at coffee_house@uucbham.org. Other Social EventsPast outings have included trips to the Anniston Museum of Natural History, the Warner-Westervelt Art Museum in Tuscaloosa, Barons Baseball games, the Cahaba Lily Festival and theater outings for plays at Terrific New Theater, Birmingham Festival Theater, Virginia Samford Theater and the Jewish Community Center plays. If you have questions about any of these, contact Cathy Taylor, chair_social@uucbham.org (or chair_seec@uucbham.org for Woo-Hoo Wednesday). Let's go together and share the fun!
